Chapter Nine

SAGE

“Y es sir, thank you for calling. Can you give me a minute to think about it and I’ll get back to you,” I told Josh.

“No problem. Take all the time you need,” he said, and I let him end the call as I tossed the phone on the sofa next to me.

“I told you you were going to get your job back,” Wish commented.

I rolled my eyes at him because what I wanted to do was punch his damn lights out for all of this chaos he’s created in my life. Najah was with Eric while I was with Wish, just until the dusk settled. I had to make up a lie about getting my mental health together, which really wasn’t, to get Eric to watch Najah for a few days. And I’ve been up in Wish’s condo since then.

“I wouldn’t have lost my damn job if you spoke up. Ugh, I can’t stand your ass already.” I rolled my eyes.

“I know you can’t, but I got something that’ll make this shit better.”

He went to the back, I assume to his room before coming back with an envelope and laid it in my lap. I looked between the envelope back to him and back again before picking up the thick, white-colored material.

“What is this?” I asked him.

“Excuse me, Mr. Benjamin. Did you want the outside done as well?” the decorator known as Ruby asked. The Grinch was getting his place done up for the holiday in none other than the color his heart must be, black.

“That’s cool. Do your thing,” he replied and turned his attention back to me.

“That’s twenty thousand.”

“For what?!” I screeched as I took the thick stash of money out. I’ve never seen so much at once.

“I caused you to miss out on a lot of shit, and I also fucked up your life a bit, so this is restitution.”

He told not one lie, but this gesture was too much. I could understand a couple of hundred, maybe a thousand, but twenty.

I counted one thousand even and tried handing it back to him.

“I’m good. That’s all you.”

“That’s insane. I got my job back, and it’s not like I’ve been without it for over a month; it’s only been a few days. I can bounce back, and this thousand will be put to good use.”

“Wish this is too much,” I sniffled.

He got up and came over to me, wrapped his arm around my shoulder, and wiped my tear with the other hand.

“It’s not. I’m a man that can admit when he fucked up. I went about this shit all wrong with you.”

His eyes were so alluring, and they did their job as I found my face slowly pulling into his, but I caught myself.

“Thank you.”

With all of this money, there was so much I could do. My son was about to have the best Christmas, and now I also had enough to pay off my last bit of auto installment loan. That’ll free up a lot of my money.
